An SAP ABAP career is one of the few tech paths in India where a fresher can join a global ERP project, write real business code within months, and grow into a cloud developer role, because almost every large company that runs SAP needs ABAP developers to build reports, forms, interfaces and new cloud extensions. However, ABAP in 2026 looks very different from the ABAP of ten years ago. So in this guide, we explain the job in plain words, show what freshers actually earn, list the skills employers ask for in real job ads, and give you a clear, step-by-step plan, along with three free tools and hands-on code you can try today.
SAP ABAP career in 2026: the quick answer
Yes, an SAP ABAP career is a strong choice for freshers in 2026, especially for B.E., B.Tech, BCA, MCA and B.Sc. Computer Science graduates. After all, ABAP is SAP’s own programming language, and Naukri lists about 6,800 SAP ABAP jobs in India. Freshers typically start around ₹2 to ₹5 lakh a year, while AmbitionBox data for SAP ABAP consultants with 1 to 7 years of experience runs from ₹3 lakh to ₹20 lakh. To get hired, learn core ABAP and object-oriented ABAP first, then the modern skills that most job ads now mention: CDS views, OData, RAP and ABAP Cloud. Finally, prove it with SAP’s official, hands-on C_ABAPD exam, which is a 3-hour, system-based test with a 67% pass score.

Key takeaways
- First of all, ABAP is the “technical” side of SAP, so it suits people who enjoy logic, coding and solving puzzles.
- Classic ABAP skills still matter, because thousands of companies run older SAP code that needs support.
- However, the fastest-growing skills are modern ones: CDS views, RAP, OData and ABAP Cloud on SAP BTP.
- SAP’s “clean core” rules mean new code must use released APIs, so freshers who learn this early stand out.
- Also, the official ABAP certification is now a hands-on, open-book exam in a live SAP system.
- Therefore, the best plan is simple: learn the basics, practise daily in a real system, build one small app, get certified, and then apply.
What is SAP ABAP? A simple explanation for your SAP ABAP career
First, imagine a huge company as a giant machine. Then think of SAP as the control panel that runs it, since it records every sale, every purchase, every salary and every stock movement. Out of the box, of course, that control panel already has thousands of buttons and screens. However, every company is a little different, so sooner or later someone says, “We need one more button,” or “We need this report in a special format.”
That someone is the ABAP developer. In fact, ABAP stands for Advanced Business Application Programming, and it’s SAP’s own programming language. In other words, when SAP’s standard screens aren’t enough, ABAP developers write the extra code that makes the system fit the business.
That’s the heart of an SAP ABAP career. So if functional consultants (such as FICO, MM or SD consultants) are the people who understand the business, then ABAP developers are the people who build what the business needs. Put simply, they work as a pair. For example, an MM consultant might say, “Purchase orders above ₹10 lakh need an extra approval step,” and the ABAP developer then writes the logic that does it.
Is ABAP like Java or Python?
In some ways, yes. For instance, ABAP has variables, loops, conditions, classes and objects, just like other modern languages. However, it was designed for business data, so it’s especially good at reading and changing database tables. Also, modern ABAP looks quite different from old ABAP, and it now uses ideas you may know from web development, such as REST services and data models.
Why ABAP still matters in 2026
- It runs the core: first, SAP S/4HANA itself is built largely with ABAP, so the language isn’t going away.
- Old code needs care: meanwhile, many companies are moving from SAP ECC to S/4HANA, and their old custom code must be checked, fixed or rebuilt.
- The cloud uses it too: also, SAP offers ABAP Cloud on SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP), so ABAP skills now reach into cloud development.
What does an SAP ABAP developer do all day?
Many freshers imagine coding for eight hours straight. In reality, however, an ABAP developer’s day is a mix of understanding, building, testing and fixing. So here is a typical day on a support or project team.
| Time | What happens | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| 9:30 | Stand-up call with the team, then a quick look at new tickets | So everyone knows the day’s priorities |
| 10:00 | Then read a “functional specification” from a FICO or MM consultant | Because you must understand the business need before coding |
| 11:00 | Write or change code, for example a new report or a CDS view | In fact, this is the core development work |
| 13:30 | Debug a production issue, such as an invoice form printing wrong totals | Also a big part of support roles |
| 15:00 | Unit test the new code, and then fix what breaks | Since untested code causes expensive problems later |
| 16:30 | Code review with a senior developer, and then a transport request | So code moves safely from development to testing |
| 17:30 | Finally, update the technical document and the ticket status | Therefore the next person can understand your work |
This is a general picture of a support or implementation day, since actual tasks vary by company and project phase.
The famous RICEFW list
For years, ABAP work has been grouped under one handy word: RICEFW. In short, it’s a checklist of the custom objects developers build.
| Letter | Stands for | A simple example |
|---|---|---|
| R | Reports | For example, a list of unpaid customer invoices older than 30 days |
| I | Interfaces | Such as sending sales orders from SAP to a courier’s system |
| C | Conversions | For instance, loading 50,000 old customer records into a new system |
| E | Enhancements | Adding an extra check before a purchase order is saved |
| F | Forms | Such as the printed invoice or delivery note |
| W | Workflows | For example, sending a purchase request to a manager for approval |
In fact, real job ads still ask for this, so RICEFW knowledge is a must for any SAP ABAP career. For example, a YASH Technologies posting on Naukri asks for “hands-on experience with RICEF objects”, along with OOABAP, CDS views, AMDP and OData. So RICEFW is still the foundation, while modern skills sit on top of it.
Classic ABAP vs modern ABAP: what changed for your SAP ABAP career
Here is the most important thing for a fresher to understand: there are really two “flavours” of ABAP work today, and employers want people who can handle both.
| Point | Classic ABAP | Modern ABAP (ABAP Cloud) |
|---|---|---|
| Where it runs | Mainly SAP ECC, as well as on-premise systems | SAP S/4HANA, as well as the ABAP environment on SAP BTP |
| Main tool | SAP GUI transactions such as SE38 and SE80 | Instead, Eclipse with ABAP Development Tools (ADT) |
| Data access | Open SQL on tables, but often with loops in code | CDS view entities, so work is pushed down to the database |
| Building apps | Classic reports and screens (dynpro) | RAP business objects, so they’re exposed as OData services for Fiori |
| Changing SAP behaviour | User exits and enhancements, as well as direct modifications | Released APIs and BAdIs only, so upgrades stay safe |
| Help from AI | Little | Joule for developers, since it can generate and explain code |
Sources: SAP Learning, SAP Community and SAP Help Portal guidance on ABAP Cloud and RAP.
So which one should a fresher learn?
Both, but in the right order, because a strong SAP ABAP career needs old and new skills. First, learn core ABAP: variables, internal tables, SQL, and object-oriented ABAP. Then move to CDS views, OData and RAP. After all, SAP’s own free learning journey, Acquiring Core ABAP Skills, teaches the basics directly in the modern style, using Eclipse rather than the old SAP GUI tools. As a result, you avoid learning habits that you’d have to unlearn later.
Clean core in SAP ABAP, explained like you’re five
First, think of SAP’s standard code as a brand-new car. In the past, some mechanics opened the engine and welded on extra parts. It worked, but every time the car maker sent an upgrade, those welded parts broke. So SAP now says: “Don’t weld the engine. Instead, plug your extras into the official sockets we provide.” That idea is called clean core.
Then, in August 2025, SAP replaced its older “three-tier” model with a clearer system of four levels, A to D. So here is what each level means.
| Level | What it means | Should freshers learn it? |
|---|---|---|
| Level A | Uses only released, stable APIs, for example RAP and released CDS views | Yes, since it’s the gold standard for all new code |
| Level B | Uses classic APIs, such as BAPIs and IDocs, that are upgrade-stable but not cloud-ready | Yes, because most existing projects still use them |
| Level C | Uses internal SAP objects, so there is some upgrade risk | Understand it, but avoid it in new designs |
| Level D | No API at all, such as direct changes to SAP code | Only so you can recognise and fix it in old systems |
Sources: SAP Community posts on the Clean Core Level Concept (2025 and 2026).
One number that shows the opportunity
For example, in May 2026, an SAP Community analysis of the S/4HANA Cloudification Repository counted 3,847 BAPI function modules for SAP Cloud ERP Private. Of those, only 23 were released as Level A, while 2,361 were classic APIs (Level B), 122 were Level C and 441 were Level D.
Source: SAP Community, “ABAP development under the Clean Core paradigm” (May 2026). Bars are scaled to the total of 3,847, while the remaining items fall outside these four labels.
So why does this matter for you? Because most old custom code relies on classic APIs, so companies need developers who can move it towards released RAP business objects. In short, that’s a large, multi-year stream of work, and freshers who learn RAP and clean core early are well placed for it. Put simply, clean core is where a long SAP ABAP career is heading.
SAP ABAP career skills employers ask for in 2026
Rather than guessing which skills help an SAP ABAP career, let’s look at what real job ads ask for. For example, recent SAP ABAP postings on Naukri from Infosys, TCS, PwC, Capgemini and YASH Technologies repeatedly mention the same skills.
| Skill | In simple words | Where you’ll see it |
|---|---|---|
| Core ABAP | Variables and internal tables, as well as loops and ABAP SQL | Every ABAP role, so it’s your foundation |
| OO ABAP | Classes, interfaces, inheritance and exceptions | Also in almost every modern posting |
| Data Dictionary | Defining tables and structures, as well as data elements | Especially in support and conversion work |
| CDS views | Data models that run inside the database, so they’re fast | S/4HANA projects, as well as Fiori and analytics |
| AMDP | ABAP methods that run SQLScript, especially in HANA | Performance-heavy S/4HANA work |
| OData services | Web services, so Fiori apps and other systems can talk to SAP | Fiori, integration and BTP projects |
| RAP | SAP’s modern model, especially for transactional apps | New S/4HANA and BTP development |
| BAdIs and enhancements | Official hooks, so you can add logic into SAP processes | Almost every implementation |
| Adobe Forms and Smartforms | Printed and PDF documents, such as invoices | Support and rollout projects |
| Debugging | Stepping through code, so you find why something breaks | Every single day, in fact |
This is based on SAP ABAP job listings on Naukri and LinkedIn in September 2026, and skill names come directly from those postings.
Soft skills that quietly decide promotions
- Reading specifications: first, you must turn a business request into a technical plan.
- Asking good questions: also, a five-minute question to the functional consultant can save two days of rework.
- Writing clearly: in addition, technical documents and ticket updates matter more than freshers expect.
- Basic business sense: finally, knowing what a purchase order or an invoice is makes you far more useful.
Check your SAP ABAP career skills against real job ads
Now let’s make it personal. First, tick every skill you can already use with some confidence. Then the tool shows how closely you match the skills that appear in real ABAP job ads, as well as what to learn next.
The weighting is our own simple estimate of how often each skill appears in postings, so treat the score as a guide rather than a precise measure.
SAP ABAP salary for freshers in India: what the data says
Salary is usually the first question, so here is the honest answer. Public salary sites disagree, because each uses different people and job titles. Therefore, we show several sources side by side.
Fresher and junior ABAP salaries
| Source | Role | Reported figure |
|---|---|---|
| Glassdoor India | Fresher SAP ABAP developer | Average ₹3,30,087 a year |
| AmbitionBox (16 salaries) | Junior SAP ABAP developer, under 1 to 3 years | So ₹2 to ₹4.9 lakh a year |
| AmbitionBox | Junior SAP ABAP developer at Vistex, as a fresher | Also about ₹4.1 to ₹5.2 lakh a year (AmbitionBox estimate) |
| AmbitionBox (3k salaries) | SAP ABAP developer, then 1 to 5 years | Then ₹2.5 to ₹12 lakh a year |
| Glassdoor India | SAP ABAP developer | Average ₹5,50,000 a year |
Sources: Glassdoor India and AmbitionBox, checked in October 2026. However, small samples can swing averages, so treat these as ranges, not promises.
ABAP consultant salaries at well-known employers
Once you have a year or two of experience, the title often changes from “developer” to “consultant”. For example, AmbitionBox has 15,300+ salary reports for SAP ABAP consultants in India, with a range of ₹3 lakh to ₹20 lakh for 1 to 7 years of experience.
Source: AmbitionBox SAP ABAP consultant salaries, updated November 2025. Also, bars show the top of each range, scaled to ₹20 lakh.
How ABAP compares with functional SAP modules
| Role (AmbitionBox) | Experience | Annual range |
|---|---|---|
| SAP ABAP consultant (13.9k salaries) | 1–7 years | ₹3.1 – 18.9 lakh |
| SAP SD consultant (12.2k salaries) | 2–8 years | ₹3.3 – 15 lakh |
| SAP FICO consultant (19.7k salaries) | 2–8 years | ₹3.4 – 13.4 lakh |
| SAP MM consultant (14.3k salaries) | 2–8 years | ₹2.7 – 12 lakh |
Source: AmbitionBox “similar designations” data shown on its SAP ABAP fresher salary page. However, ranges use different experience bands, so compare them broadly.
In short, an SAP ABAP career starts at roughly the same pay level as functional modules, but the top of the range reaches higher. However, that higher end usually comes with modern skills, such as RAP, CDS and BTP, together with real project experience. If you’re still choosing between technical and functional SAP, our comparison of SAP FICO vs SAP MM vs SAP SD explains the functional side.

SAP ABAP career job roles for freshers
Freshers rarely start an SAP ABAP career with the title “consultant”. Instead, most begin in one of these entry roles, and then move up after their first project.
You join a training batch, and then a support or project team, where you build reports, fix small bugs and learn the company’s coding standards.
You investigate tickets, debug programs and apply fixes, so you learn real systems very quickly.
You build CDS views, OData services and enhancements, and you also help remediate old custom code.
You build RAP apps and side-by-side extensions on SAP BTP, often together with Fiori developers.
A typical SAP ABAP career path
A general career pattern. Many people move faster, especially when they add RAP, BTP or a functional module.
Where the ABAP jobs are
| Signal | Figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| So many SAP ABAP job listings in India | 6,843 | Naukri |
| All ABAP-related openings in India | 9,781 | Naukri |
| SAP ABAP jobs in India | 2,000+ | |
| Cities that appear most often in postings | Especially Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Chennai, Mumbai, Gurugram and Kolkata | Naukri and LinkedIn listings |
Job counts change daily, so treat them as a September 2026 snapshot. Also, many listings ask for 3+ years, while fresher roles are often filled through campus and training programmes.
SAP ABAP certification for your career: C_ABAPD explained
Currently, the main certification for ABAP freshers is SAP Certified – Backend Developer – ABAP Cloud, with the exam code C_ABAPD. Importantly, it changed in 2026, so older blogs may be out of date.
| Detail | C_ABAPD in 2026 |
|---|---|
| Format | One system-based assessment, so you solve real development tasks in a live system |
| Duration | 3 hours during the beta phase; SAP says it will extend to 4 hours later |
| Pass score | 67% |
| Environment | The ABAP environment on SAP BTP, together with ABAP Development Tools in Eclipse |
| Based on | SAP courses S4D400 and S4D401 for ABAP, as well as S4D430 for data modelling and CDS |
| AI help | Also, Joule for developers is available inside the exam system |
| Validity | 12 months, and then a short yearly stay-certified assessment |
Sources: SAP Learning certification page and the SAP Community post “A New System-Based ABAP Certification Is Here” (March 2026).
Why this new format helps freshers
The old exam was multiple choice, so memorising could get you through. However, the new exam asks you to actually build things. As a result, a fresher starting an SAP ABAP career who has practised daily in a real system can do well, even without years of experience. Also, an SAP expert advises updating Eclipse and ADT before the exam, and practising in the official training systems, because the exam system uses the same data model, tables and field names.
So for more on how SAP exams changed, read our guides to the SAP S/4HANA certification 2026 exam format and SAP certification validity.
Free resources SAP itself provides
- Acquiring Core ABAP Skills: first, a free SAP learning journey that teaches ABAP basics, RAP and Joule for developers. When SAP launched it in 2022, it offered about 40 hours of free learning.
- SAP BTP trial: also, a free 90-day trial where you can create an ABAP environment and connect Eclipse. However, you must log in at least once every 30 days, or the account may be deleted.
- SAP Developer Center tutorials: finally, step-by-step missions, such as creating a BTP ABAP environment trial user in about 15 minutes.
Your first SAP ABAP code: a gentle hands-on start
Let’s write some real ABAP. Don’t worry if you’ve never seen it before, because we’ll explain every line. Also, these examples use modern ABAP syntax that works in the ABAP Cloud environment.
Example 1 – Hello, ABAP
First, this tiny class prints a message to the Eclipse console. It’s usually the very first thing you run.
CLASS zcl_hello_abap DEFINITION PUBLIC FINAL CREATE PUBLIC.
PUBLIC SECTION.
INTERFACES if_oo_adt_classrun.
ENDCLASS.
CLASS zcl_hello_abap IMPLEMENTATION.
METHOD if_oo_adt_classrun~main.
out->write( 'Hello, ABAP!' ).
ENDMETHOD.
ENDCLASS.- CLASS … DEFINITION: first, this says “here is a new class”, and the name starts with Z because custom objects use Z or Y.
- INTERFACES if_oo_adt_classrun: then this lets you run the class directly in Eclipse by pressing F9.
- out->write: finally, this prints text to the console.
Example 2 – Then read data with ABAP SQL
Next, let’s read some data. So this example declares a table on the fly and fills it with up to ten rows.
SELECT FROM /dmo/flight
FIELDS carrier_id, connection_id, flight_date, price
WHERE carrier_id = 'LH'
INTO TABLE @DATA(lt_flights)
UP TO 10 ROWS.
out->write( lt_flights ).Here, @DATA(lt_flights) creates an internal table automatically, so you don’t need a long declaration first. Also, /dmo/flight is a demo table that SAP provides in training and trial systems.
Example 3 – Finally, a simple CDS view entity
Now for modern ABAP. In short, a CDS view entity describes data in a reusable way, and the database does the heavy lifting.
@AccessControl.authorizationCheck: #NOT_REQUIRED
@EndUserText.label: 'Flights for beginners'
define view entity ZI_FLIGHT_BASIC
as select from /dmo/flight
{
key carrier_id as CarrierId,
key connection_id as ConnectionId,
key flight_date as FlightDate,
price as Price,
currency_code as CurrencyCode
}In other words, this view gives friendly names to table fields. Later, you can build OData services and Fiori apps on top of it, which is exactly what RAP does.
/DMO/ namespace come from SAP’s ABAP Flight Reference Scenario. So if a table isn’t visible in your system, check that the demo content is installed, or follow SAP’s tutorial to set it up.SAP ABAP career mini quiz: test yourself in 2 minutes

Hands-on SAP ABAP labs for freshers
Reading code is useful, but writing it is what launches an SAP ABAP career. So try these labs in an SAP BTP trial or a training system, and repeat each one until it feels easy.
Lab 1 – First, set up your free ABAP playground (about 1 hour)
- First, create a free SAP BTP trial account and choose a region.
- Next, run the “Prepare an Account for ABAP Trial” booster, and copy your service instance URL.
- Then install Eclipse and add ABAP Development Tools from SAP’s tools site.
- Finally, create an ABAP Cloud project in Eclipse, and run the Hello ABAP class from Example 1.
Lab 2 – Your first useful report
- First, create a class that reads flights for one airline, as in Example 2.
- Next, add a loop that adds up the total price of all those flights.
- Then print the count and the total to the console.
- Finally, add a check: if no flights are found, print a friendly message instead.
Lab 3 – Your first CDS view and Fiori preview
- First, create the CDS view entity from Example 3.
- Next, add a simple RAP service definition and service binding for it.
- Then publish the binding and open the Fiori elements preview.
- Finally, take a screenshot, because this becomes your first portfolio piece.
Lab 4 – Debugging practice
- First, add a deliberate bug to your report, such as dividing by a field that can be zero.
- Next, set a breakpoint in Eclipse and run the class.
- Then step through each line and watch the variables change.
- Finally, fix the bug and write two lines about what you learned, since interviewers love debugging stories.
How to start an SAP ABAP career as a fresher in 7 steps
So here is the whole journey as a simple, step-by-step plan, and most freshers can complete it in about four to six months of steady effort.
- Check that ABAP suits you: First, try a free tutorial or the mini quiz above, because ABAP is best for people who enjoy logic and coding.
- Learn core ABAP and OO ABAP: Next, master variables, internal tables, ABAP SQL, classes and interfaces, ideally in Eclipse with ADT.
- Move to modern ABAP: Then learn CDS view entities, OData services and the basics of RAP, together with clean-core rules.
- Practise daily in a real system: After that, use an SAP BTP trial or your course system for at least one hour a day, and repeat the labs above.
- Build one small portfolio app: Create a simple RAP app, for example a list of flights with a Fiori preview, and save screenshots and notes.
- Pass the C_ABAPD exam: Prepare with the official learning journeys and timed practice, and then book the 3-hour, system-based exam.
- Apply widely and prepare for interviews: Finally, update your resume and LinkedIn, apply to trainee, support and junior developer roles, and practise the interview questions below.
A 16-week study plan for your SAP ABAP career
| Weeks | Focus | You can now… |
|---|---|---|
| 1–2 | SAP basics and Eclipse ADT set-up, then ABAP syntax | Write and run simple classes |
| 3–5 | Internal tables and ABAP SQL, as well as modularisation | Read, filter and summarise data |
| 6–7 | Object-oriented ABAP and exceptions | So you can design small classes with clear methods |
| 8–9 | Data Dictionary, then CDS view entities | Build reusable data models |
| 10–11 | OData services and RAP basics | Publish a simple service, then preview it in Fiori |
| 12 | Enhancements, BAdIs and clean-core levels | Also explain how to extend SAP safely |
| 13–14 | Portfolio app and debugging practice | Finally, show and explain one complete app |
| 15–16 | C_ABAPD preparation and mock interviews | Sit the exam, as well as answer common questions |
This is a sample plan for about 10 to 15 study hours a week, although a structured course can shorten it, since Atos ABAP training runs for 80 to 120 hours.
SAP ABAP career interview questions freshers should expect
Generally, interviewers for fresher ABAP roles test three things: basic concepts, modern ABAP awareness, and how you think. So here are common questions, along with what a good answer includes.
| Question | What a good answer includes |
|---|---|
| “What is an internal table?” | A table held in memory while the program runs, as well as the main table types: standard, sorted and hashed |
| “So what’s the difference between a structure and a table?” | A structure holds one row, while an internal table holds many rows |
| “Also, what is a CDS view, and why use it?” | A data model defined in ABAP that runs in the database, so it’s faster and reusable |
| “What is RAP?” | SAP’s modern model for transactional apps and OData services, since it builds on CDS and behaviour definitions |
| “What does clean core mean?” | Extending SAP only through released APIs and official extension points, so upgrades stay safe |
| “What is a BAdI?” | An official hook, so you add custom logic without changing SAP code |
| “Then, how do you find a bug in a program?” | Reproduce it, set a breakpoint, step through, watch variables, and then fix and retest |
| “What does RICEFW stand for?” | Reports and Interfaces, as well as Conversions, Enhancements, Forms and Workflows |
| “Finally, tell me about something you built.” | Your portfolio app, such as the goal, the objects, a problem you solved and the result |
Your fresher ABAP resume checklist
- First, a headline such as “SAP ABAP Developer – ABAP Cloud, CDS, RAP”
- Then a skills section using the exact words from job ads, such as OO ABAP, CDS views and OData
- One portfolio project with screenshots, together with a short description
- Next, your C_ABAPD certification, with a link to the Credly badge
- Also, any programming background, such as Java, Python or SQL
- Finally, a GitHub or blog link showing your learning notes, if you have one
Tips from the experts
This advice comes from the Atos SAP training and placement team, since it reflects what helps ABAP freshers get hired.
- Learn modern ABAP from day one: Start in Eclipse with ADT, because that’s where new projects work, and SAP’s own learning journeys teach it that way.
- Don’t skip the basics: Even with RAP, interviewers still ask about internal tables, loops and SQL, so master them first.
- Practise one hour every day: Short, daily practice beats long weekend sessions, especially for a hands-on exam.
- Learn one business process: After all, knowing procure-to-pay or order-to-cash makes your code more useful, and it impresses functional colleagues.
- Use AI as a helper, not a crutch: Joule for developers can generate code, but you must still understand and check every line.
- Read other people’s code: Study SAP’s demo scenarios, because good examples teach good habits.
- Apply beyond big brands: In practice, smaller SAP partners often train freshers well and give real project work sooner.
Myths vs facts about an SAP ABAP career
| Myth | Fact |
|---|---|
| “ABAP is dying.” | No. S/4HANA and SAP BTP still use ABAP, and ABAP Cloud is SAP’s modern extension model. |
| “Surely only computer science graduates can learn ABAP.” | Not true, since any graduate with logical thinking can learn it, although coding background helps. |
| “Classic ABAP is useless now.” | Not at all. Many systems still run classic code, so support and migration need it. |
| “AI will replace ABAP developers.” | Unlikely soon. Instead, tools such as Joule help developers work faster, while humans still design and check. |
| “Certification alone gets you hired.” | Rarely, because hands-on practice and a portfolio app matter as much. |
| “Also, ABAP pays less than functional modules.” | Not on the data above, since ABAP consultant ranges reach higher than FICO, MM and SD. |
Is an SAP ABAP career right for you, or is a functional module better?
| Choose ABAP if you… | Instead, choose a functional module if you… |
|---|---|
| Enjoy coding and logic, as well as technical puzzles | Prefer business processes, people and requirements |
| Hold a B.E., B.Tech, BCA, MCA or B.Sc. in Computer Science | Hold a B.Com, MBA or CA, or an engineering degree with a business focus |
| Like building things, then seeing them work | Prefer designing how a process should work |
| Want to grow towards cloud development on SAP BTP | Aim for business consulting as well as solution design |
Also, there’s a middle path for an SAP ABAP career. Many senior people become techno-functional consultants, who know ABAP and one module, such as FICO or SD. As a result, they understand both the business need and the code, which makes them very valuable.

Frequently asked questions about an SAP ABAP career
Questions about the career
Is SAP ABAP a good career for freshers in 2026?
Yes. For example, Naukri lists about 6,800 SAP ABAP jobs in India, and companies moving to SAP S/4HANA need developers for new code and for fixing old code. Also, modern skills such as CDS, RAP and ABAP Cloud help freshers stand out.
Is ABAP still in demand, or is it dying?
ABAP is still in demand. In fact, SAP S/4HANA is built largely with ABAP, and SAP’s modern cloud extension model, ABAP Cloud, also uses it. However, the skills have shifted towards CDS views, RAP and clean-core development.
Can a non-IT graduate start an SAP ABAP career?
Yes, if you enjoy logic and are ready to learn coding. Generally, computer science and IT graduates find it easier, but other graduates can learn ABAP with steady practice.
Which is better for freshers: SAP ABAP or SAP FICO?
It depends on your background, since ABAP suits people who enjoy coding, while FICO suits commerce and finance graduates. Also, on AmbitionBox, SAP ABAP consultant ranges reach about ₹18.9 lakh for 1 to 7 years, compared with about ₹13.4 lakh for FICO consultants with 2 to 8 years.
Questions about salary and jobs
What is the SAP ABAP salary for freshers in India?

What job roles can a fresher get with SAP ABAP?
For example, common entry roles include ABAP trainee or associate developer, SAP technical support analyst, junior ABAP developer on S/4HANA projects, and junior BTP or ABAP Cloud developer. After that, people usually move to ABAP developer, consultant and technical lead roles.
Questions about skills and certification
What skills do I need for an SAP ABAP career?
First, start with core ABAP, internal tables, ABAP SQL and object-oriented ABAP. Then learn CDS view entities, OData services, RAP, BAdIs and debugging. Also, basic knowledge of one SAP business process, such as procure-to-pay, helps a lot.
Which SAP ABAP certification should a fresher take?
Currently, the main certification is SAP Certified – Backend Developer – ABAP Cloud, with exam code C_ABAPD. So it’s a 3-hour, system-based exam with a 67% pass score, taken in the ABAP environment on SAP BTP using Eclipse.
Questions about learning and training
How long does it take to learn SAP ABAP?
Generally, with 10 to 15 hours of study a week, most freshers can become job-ready in about four months. A structured course usually takes 80 to 120 hours, and then you add time for practice, a portfolio app and certification.
