SAP certification validity is now just 12 months, so if you passed an SAP exam and then forgot about it, your certificate may already be expired, or it may be about to expire. Also, that rule applies to every SAP certified professional in every country, whether you work in Pune, Dubai, London or New York. So in this guide, we explain the rule in plain words, show you how to check your own status in two minutes, and walk you through renewing before it’s too late.
SAP certification validity: the quick answer
Since April 2024, every SAP certification is valid for one year. To keep it valid, you must pass a short, non-proctored “stay certified” assessment before your due date, which then extends validity by another 12 months. However, this assessment is only available with an active SAP Learning Hub subscription. So if you don’t have one, you have to buy and pass the full SAP certification exam again each year. Also, if you miss the due date, your status changes to “Expired”, so you then need a full exam of the current release to become certified again. Older certificates issued before April 2024 expired on 31 March 2025 unless their holders moved to the new system.

Log in to learning.sap.com, open My Learning → Certifications, and look at the status next to each certificate. So if it says “Stay certified due”, act this week. If it says “Expired”, keep reading, because you still have options.
Key takeaways
- First of all, SAP certificates are no longer “for life”; each one lasts 12 months.
- The cheap way to renew is a 20–30 minute online quiz, but it needs an SAP Learning Hub subscription.
- However, without Learning Hub, you must retake the full exam every year, which takes 2–3 hours.
- SAP says validity is extended 12 months from the date you pass the assessment, so taking it very early can cost you time.
- Also, if you hold several certificates, each one needs its own stay certified assessment.
- Also, full-time university students can get SAP Learning Hub, student edition free for 12 months.
What changed in SAP certification validity, and why?
Think of a driving licence. For example, years ago some licences lasted almost forever. But cars changed, roads changed and rules changed, so now most licences need renewing. Similarly, SAP has done the same thing with its certificates.
Before April 2024, an SAP certificate had no end date. In fact, an SAP Community answer from 2012 said there was “no end date on the certification validity”. That changed when SAP moved to a “get and stay certified” model. So now, SAP says everyone with an SAP certification must keep it valid by completing mandatory yearly assessments (SAP Learning).
Why did SAP change its certification validity rules?
SAP’s reason is simple. In a cloud-first world, SAP products change much faster than they used to, so professionals need to update their skills more often. As a result, a certificate now shows that you know the product as it is today, rather than as it was five years ago (SAP Staying certified FAQ).
SAP certification validity before and after April 2024
| Point | Before April 2024 | From April 2024 onwards |
|---|---|---|
| How long it lasts | No end date | 12 months |
| How you keep it | Nothing, because it never expired | Instead, pass a yearly stay certified assessment |
| What you need | Nothing | An SAP Learning Hub subscription, or else a yearly full exam |
| Where you check it | Paper or PDF certificate | My Learning on SAP Learning, as well as your Credly badge |
| If you miss it | Not applicable | Status becomes “Expired”, so you need a new full exam |

How to check your SAP certification validity status
This takes about two minutes. First, make sure your SAP Universal ID has at least two email addresses from different domains, for example a Gmail and a work email. SAP requires this before it shows your certification details (SAP step-by-step guide).
What your three SAP certification validity labels mean
“You’re fine for now”
Your expiry date is not close yet, so there is nothing you need to do today. However, note the date in your calendar.
“Act soon”
Here, your certificate is close to expiring. Therefore, pass the assessment before the due date to extend it by 12 months.
“The window has closed”
You missed the due date, so the certificate is no longer valid. Instead, you now need to pass a full exam of the current release.
These status meanings come from SAP’s official “How to stay certified” guide.
Also check your Credly badge for SAP certification validity
SAP also issues its certification badges through Credly. So after you pass a stay certified assessment, SAP says the new validity date and the proof of your assessment appear at the bottom of the badge. Note, though, that this update only works on the newer blue “Stay Certified” badges. Also, one SAP Community member reported that his renewal date updated in both SAP Learning and Credly about one day after he passed (SAP Community).
SAP certification validity calculator: find your key dates
First, enter the date you passed your exam, or the date you last passed a stay certified assessment. Then this simple tool shows your likely due date and the dates SAP usually sends reminders.

Please turn on JavaScript to use this calculator.
This is only a planning aid, since it is based on the 12-month rule. So always treat the “Stay certified due” date in My Learning as the official date.
Three ways to keep your SAP certification validity
Now for the important part. Generally, there are three main paths, and the right one depends on who you are and who is paying.
| Path | What you do each year | Time needed | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. SAP Learning Hub subscription | Pass a short stay certified quiz, but for each certificate | About 20–30 minutes per quiz | Working professionals, especially if an employer pays |
| 2. Buy, then retake the full exam | Buy an exam attempt, and then pass the full certification exam again | About 2–3 hours per exam, as well as study time | People who certify only once in a while |
| 3. SAP Learning Hub, student edition | Use the free student subscription, which can be renewed while you are enrolled | Also the same short quiz as path 1 | Especially students actively enrolled at a university |

What each SAP option includes
| SAP offering | Exam attempts | Stay certified access? | Listed price |
|---|---|---|---|
| SAP Learning Hub | 4 per year | Yes, as well as prep material and live sessions | Priced per user per year, so check with SAP or a partner |
| SAP Certification exam, two attempts | 2, as well as 10 hours of practice systems | No | USD 276 globally, while SAP’s India page lists INR 26,244 |
| SAP Certification exam, one attempt | 1 | No | See SAP’s certification page |
| SAP Certification exam, six attempts (CER006) | 6 | No | Being discontinued; on sale only until 30 September 2026 |
| SAP Learning Hub, student edition | 2 | Yes, while you stay enrolled | Free for eligible students |

Which SAP certification validity path is cheapest for you?
These time figures come from SAP’s community manager, so the bars compare exam time only, not money.
In short, if you hold two or more certificates, or if you plan to add new ones, Learning Hub usually makes more sense. After all, it also includes four exam attempts a year. On the other hand, if you hold one certificate and rarely need it, then retaking the exam when you need it may be enough.
What the SAP stay certified assessment looks like
Here is the good news: the stay certified assessment is much easier than the main exam. It is designed to check that you know what’s new, rather than to test everything again.
| Feature | Stay certified assessment | Full certification exam |
|---|---|---|
| Length | About 20–30 minutes | Usually around 3 hours |
| Questions | For example, 8 to 12 for current FI and CO certifications | Instead, a full set of tasks or questions |
| Proctored? | No | No live proctor in the new format, although identity is checked |
| Retries | Unlimited, until you pass | However, each try uses one paid attempt |
| Preparation | Linked courses or live sessions | Full learning journey, as well as hands-on practice |
| Result | Validity extended by 12 months | New certification for 12 months |

When to take it to protect your SAP certification validity
This is where many people make a costly mistake, because SAP’s official guide says the new due date is extended 12 months from the date you pass the assessment. So if you pass three months early, your new due date also moves three months earlier. Also, some learners report that the assessment only opens in the period shortly before the due date, often described as the last 90 days.
Therefore, the smart move is simple. Wait until your status shows “Stay certified due”, and then pass the assessment within the next few weeks. That way, you keep most of your year while leaving time to fix any login or subscription problems.
Watch out if you hold several certificates
For example, an SAP Finance product expert explained in June 2026 that people with several FI and CO certifications must take the same test once for each certificate, because the system can’t cross-check them yet. Also, a separate “knowledge badge” assessment in the same learning journey does not count towards staying certified (SAP Community).
What happens if your SAP certification validity has expired?
Don’t panic, since your skills didn’t disappear on the expiry date. However, your official status did, so here is exactly what that means.
- Your status becomes “Expired”: first, SAP says your certification is no longer valid after the due date.
- The short quiz is no longer an option: instead, you must pass a full exam of the current release of your certification.
- Your Credly badge may show as expired: Credly says the issuing organisation controls the expiry date, so SAP must update it.
- Your learning history stays: you can still see the date you first earned the certificate in My Learning.
How to restore SAP certification validity after expiry
- First, check which exam is the current release for your area, using the SAP Certification finder on SAP Learning.
- Next, buy an exam option, or subscribe to SAP Learning Hub if you want to stay certified afterwards.
- Then prepare with hands-on practice, because the new exams are practical and system-based.
- Finally, pass the exam and put your new due date straight into your calendar.
What happens to SAP certification validity when SAP retires an exam?
Sometimes SAP retires a certification completely, for example when a product is replaced. In that case, however, you can no longer book that exam or take its stay certified assessment after the retirement date.
Still, SAP gives you a fair head start, because anyone with a valid certificate on the retirement date gets an extra 12 months of validity from that date, without needing an assessment. For example, SAP explains that for a retirement date of 30 June 2025, all valid certificates stay valid until 30 June 2026 (SAP retirement FAQ).
During that year, SAP recommends that you move to a successor or alternative certification. Also, SAP sends automated reminder emails two weeks before and the day before a certificate expires.
How to renew your SAP certification validity in 7 steps
Here is a simple plan you can follow today, and it works for any SAP certification, anywhere in the world.
- Fix your SAP Universal ID: First, add a second email address from a different domain, and link any old S-user or P-user accounts to it.
- Check your status and due date: Open My Learning, then Certifications, and write down the status and the “Stay certified due” date for each certificate.
- Confirm your subscription: Next, check whether you, your employer or your university already provides SAP Learning Hub access.
- Choose your path: Then pick Learning Hub, a yearly full exam, or the student edition, based on the table above.
- Prepare with the linked material: After that, open the courses or live sessions listed under “Prepare for stay certified assessment” for each certificate.
- Pass the assessment before the due date: Take the short quiz once your status shows “Stay certified due”, and then repeat it for every certificate you hold.
- Confirm the new date: Check that My Learning and your Credly badge both show the new due date, and then set a reminder for next year.
Your yearly SAP certification validity checklist
- First, your Universal ID has two email addresses from different domains
- Then every certificate’s due date is saved in your calendar
- Learning Hub access is confirmed before the due date, not after
- Also, email notifications from SAP Learning are switched on
- Next, each certificate has its own passed assessment
- Finally, Credly badges show the updated validity date
Hands-on practice: keep skills as current as your SAP certification validity
A valid certificate certainly opens the door. But since new SAP exams are practical, your hands-on skills decide whether you pass next time. So try these quick drills on a practice system once a month.
Lab 1 – The “what’s new” drill (any module)
- First, open the preparation course linked to your stay certified assessment.
- Next, pick one new feature it mentions, such as a new Fiori app or setting.
- Then find that feature in a practice system and try it yourself.
- Finally, write two lines on what it does, since this becomes your own revision note.
Lab 2 – FI refresh in 30 minutes
- First, post a vendor invoice with
FB60and a customer invoice withFB70. - Then run a payment with
F110and clear the open items. - Finally, check the result in the Universal Journal, and note any screen that looks different from last year.
Lab 3 – MM and SD refresh in 30 minutes
- For MM, first create a purchase order with
ME21N, then post the goods receipt (MIGO) and the invoice (MIRO). - For SD, instead, create a sales order (
VA01), a delivery (VL01N) and a billing document (VF01). - Finally, open the accounting document to check that everything reached finance correctly.
Tips from the experts
This advice comes from the Atos SAP training team, since it reflects what learners and working consultants ask us every week.
- Set two reminders, not one: Put one reminder when the status should turn “Stay certified due”, and another two weeks before the due date.
- Don’t renew too early: Because the new date counts from the day you pass, taking the quiz months early simply shortens your year.
- Use your personal email as the main login: If you change jobs, a work email may stop working, but your certificate should stay with you.
- Ask your employer first: Many SAP partners and customers already buy Learning Hub for their teams, so check before you pay yourself.
- Count your certificates: Each one needs its own assessment, so three certificates mean three quizzes.
- Keep practising between renewals: The short quiz keeps the badge alive, while hands-on practice keeps you employable.
Myths vs facts about SAP certification validity
| Myth | Fact |
|---|---|
| “SAP certificates are valid for life.” | Not anymore. Since April 2024, they are valid for 12 months. |
| “Only cloud certifications expire.” | No, because SAP says everyone with an SAP certification must complete yearly assessments. |
| “The renewal is another 3-hour exam.” | Not with Learning Hub. Instead, it is a short quiz of about 20–30 minutes. |
| “If I fail the quiz, I lose my certificate.” | No. The quiz has unlimited retries, as long as you pass before the due date. |
| “One quiz renews all my certificates.” | Unfortunately not, since each certificate needs its own assessment. |
| “My exam pack includes renewal.” | No, because the one-, two- and six-attempt packs do not include stay certified access. |
| “An expired certificate can be renewed with the quiz.” | No. Instead, after expiry, you need a full exam of the current release. |
What SAP certification validity means for you
| You are… | What to do |
|---|---|
| A student | Apply for the free SAP Learning Hub, student edition, since it includes two exam attempts and can be renewed while you’re enrolled. |
| A fresher who just passed | Save your due date now, and then plan how you will access Learning Hub before next year. |
| A working consultant | First, ask your employer about team Learning Hub access, and then renew each certificate on time. |
| Someone whose certificate already expired in 2025 | Pick the current-release exam for your area, then prepare with hands-on practice. |
| A hiring manager | Check the Credly badge and its validity date, rather than an old PDF. |
Also, the timing matters. SAP’s mainstream maintenance for ECC ends on 31 December 2027, so many companies are hiring S/4HANA people right now, and a valid certificate helps you stand out. So you can read more in our guides on the SAP S/4HANA 2027 deadline and the SAP S/4HANA certification 2026 exam format.

Frequently asked questions about SAP certification validity
Questions about validity
How long is SAP certification valid?
Since April 2024, every SAP certification is valid for one year. So you keep it valid by passing a short yearly stay certified assessment, which extends validity by another 12 months.
Do SAP certifications expire?
Yes. SAP certifications now expire after 12 months unless you pass the stay certified assessment before your due date. Also, most certificates issued before April 2024 expired on 31 March 2025 unless their holders moved to the new system.
How do I check my SAP certification validity?
Log in to learning.sap.com, open My Learning, and then go to Certifications. There you will see the status, which is Valid, Stay certified due or Expired, as well as the stay certified due date for each certificate.
Is my old SAP certificate from before 2024 still valid?
Probably not. SAP says certificates issued before April 2024 expired on 31 March 2025, unless the holder activated the new features and passed a stay certified assessment. So check your status in My Learning to be sure.
Questions about renewal
How do I renew my SAP certification?
With an SAP Learning Hub subscription, you pass a short, non-proctored stay certified assessment before your due date. However, without a subscription, you must buy and pass the full certification exam again each year.
Do I need SAP Learning Hub to stay certified?
Yes, for the short assessment, because SAP says you need an SAP Learning Hub subscription to access the stay certified assessment and its preparation material. Otherwise, you can retake the full exam every year instead.
How long is the SAP stay certified assessment?
It usually takes about 20 to 30 minutes. For example, the current FI and CO assessments have 8 to 12 questions, and you can retry as many times as you need until you pass.
When should I take the stay certified assessment?
Take it once your status shows “Stay certified due”, and well before the due date. Because SAP extends validity 12 months from the date you pass, taking it very early shortens your year.
Does one stay certified assessment renew all my SAP certificates?
No. Instead, each certification needs its own passed assessment, even if the questions are the same. So if you hold three certificates, you need to pass three assessments.
Questions about expiry and retirement
What happens if my SAP certification expires?
First, your status changes to Expired, and the certificate is no longer valid. After that, the short assessment is no longer available, so you need to pass a full exam of the current release to become certified again.
What happens when SAP retires a certification?
After the retirement date, you can no longer book that exam or its stay certified assessment. However, anyone with a valid certificate on that date gets an extra 12 months of validity, and SAP recommends a successor certification.
Questions about cost and training
How much does it cost to keep an SAP certification valid?
It depends on your path. For example, SAP Learning Hub is priced per user per year and includes stay certified access. Alternatively, the two-attempt exam pack is listed at USD 276, or INR 26,244 on SAP’s India page, but it does not include stay certified access.
Is there a free way for students to stay certified?
Yes. In fact, SAP Learning Hub, student edition is free for students actively enrolled at a university. It includes two certification attempts and lasts 12 months, and you can renew it free while you remain enrolled.
Why should I train for SAP certification with Atos?
Because Atos is a Platinum SAP Partner with more than 4,500 certified resources, its centres also appear on SAP’s official training location list. Moreover, its courses follow SAP’s own academy curriculum, and they include live system practice, certification guidance and interview support.
So build current, hands-on SAP skills with Atos, and then stay ready for every renewal and every interview.
Since SAP rules, prices and dates can change, always confirm the latest details on the official SAP Learning help centre before you pay or book.
